Need To Get Away? 5 Great Weekend Trip Ideas From Baltimore

Summer has finally arrived, and as more and more people are getting vaccinated after a year of being cooped up, people are feeling ready to travel. Likely, you haven't been able to plan a large-scale vacation this summer due to the uncertainty of things opening back up. But that doesn't mean you can't still have a great trip within driving distance from home. This summer could be an excellent opportunity to explore what's in your backyard and discover the natural beauty, quirky towns, and bustling cities that are only a drive away.

Shepherdstown, WV

West Virginia might not be the first place that pops into your head when you think about planning a vacation, but think again! Located just an hour and a half away from our beloved Baltimore, Shepherdstown offers incredible scenery and loads of character. This funky, artsy college town has lots to offer, like a burgeoning restaurant scene and local artisan shops. It is even the host of the annual Contemporary American Theater Festival. Not only that, but it is situated right off the C&O Canal, a gorgeous waterway lined with a quiet, shaded footpath.

Philadelphia, PA

When thinking about a nearby city to visit, your first thought might be Washington, D.C. While we love our neighbors to the South, it is easy to forget how close Philadelphia is. One hour by train, about two hours by car - it will take you no time at all to be transported to the City of Brotherly Love. Philadelphia, of course, needs no introduction. Still, as the nation's 6th most populous city, there is no end to the sights and activities you can explore there, from historical landmarks to the thriving nightlife.

Frederick, MD

If you crave a quaint, small city with lots of charm, look no further than Frederick, MD. Known for its robust antiquing scene, stroll through the many shops throughout town, and come home with unique treasures for your home. Frederick also has an award-winning restaurant scene, offers many great Airbnb options, and is less than an hour away!

Assateague Island, MD

Beaches, horses, forests - what else do you need? Located two and a half hours away on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, this whimsical island really feels like a hop, skip, and a jump away. Whether you're interested in camping amongst the wild horses, spending the day sunbathing on the beach, or renting a cozy Airbnb, there are plenty of options for friend groups and families alike.

Berkeley Springs, WV

Berkeley Springs is an incredible hidden gem about two hours from Baltimore. This historic spa and the art-filled town boasts natural mineral spas and historic bed and breakfasts. Voted by USA Today as one of the Top 10 Small Historic Towns in America, this is a spot you will not want to miss.

With all of these beautiful places to choose from, it will be hard to pick just one. The great news is that you don't have to pick one since all of these destinations are within reach! Having access to so many great cities, towns, and nature retreats is one of many great things about living in Baltimore.
